EPISODE 014 - WORK, WORK, WORK

Pre-empted Show: The Muppets Get Stuffed

Since Christine's father believes that working on a TV show is no real work, she spends the episode shoveling dirt in and out of a wheel barrow on the link set. Ross demands to do the work for her, but only after Christine said that Kevin had lost a roll of quarters in the dirt. Of course, Ross didn't give Christine the chance to explain that Kevin had already claimed the quarters.

Production: A Load of You Know What

DID YOU NOTICE?

  • The original, hour-long, local version of this episode no longer exists, but the 28-minute cut does.
  • Since this was the first episode of a new season, producers couldn't have shot new "roving camera" scenes, as they had no way of telling the viewers where the camera would be. So, producers lifted whole blocks of these scenes from the Whatever Turns You On pilot, which, in turn, had borrowed the segments from 1979 YCDTOTV episodes.
  • Christine's real father makes an appearance at the end of the episode.
  • Before Nickelodeon started playing this series regularly, the station played this episode several times throughout 1981 as kind of a "special" to see if the audience would buy it ... and they did. In 1982, the show began to be a regular feature on the schedule and the rest is history.
  • You may notice that in certain scenes, everyone's hair is considerably longer. These takes were done well after taping was complete for the season. They needed to reshoot a number of scenes to introduce the opposite sketches or kids telling jokes. They didn't want reference to the location of the roving camera or any of the other live bits for the version that went to Nickelodeon.
