Thread: Who wrote this scene?

    Default Who wrote this scene?

I suppose there is an easier way to look this up or something, but who wrote this scene?: two of the kids are talking (I think it is Doug and Vanessa maybe?) and the one says "why are you so depressed?" and the other says "I'm doomed" and the girl asks why, and the boy says "because no one on todays show has been slimed yet, and I just know it's going to be me!"
..and the scene goes on with the girl trying to cheer him up but then he does end up getting slimed and she says "well, on the other hand sometimes you just have to go with what you feel!"
I liked this scene alot, but forget which episode it's in-does anyone have any memories about this scene?

    It's mine!

And there is, in fact, a very long and involved story associated with it.

It's from "Pessimism/Optimism," and it was a last-minute addition to the script. Originally, there were two very complicated sketches, involving chroma-key clouds. Doug was supposed to be "under a cloud" i.e. feeling gloomy, and Vanessa came in and said something about it, and by the end of the second sketch, they were to conclude that they were "brothers and sisters in slime," or something like that. Brenda Mason scheduled it for the very last day of taping for the 1985 episodes. There were only a few things to do that day, so Brenda saved all the complicated stuff until then, just to make sure she had time to spare in case anything unexpected happened. (Which it did - there was a technical glitch during the slime sketch for "Romance and Dating," which I've described elsewhere.)

In the case of the "Pessimism/Optimism" stuff, the unexpected happened before taping day. Doug got food poisoning or something and passed out in the middle of the last read-through. We weren't sure whether he'd recover in time to tape the sketches, so Brenda asked me to do a simple "emergency sketch" that she use in case she had to bring Doug and Vanessa back for a couple of hours on a weekday. As it turned out, Doug was just fine on taping day, but Brenda and Roger liked my new sketch so much (and also liked the fact that it was so much simpler) that we used it anyway.

You may recall that at the end of the sketch, Doug reaches up and pats Vanessa's shoulder with his slime-covered hand. What you don't see is Vanessa mouthing "You bastard!" at him, which is exactly what she did.

wow that is cool-I forget if the scene is in one of the youtube compilations or not for the 85 year but it should be!
-my story for remembering it, is that my cousin and I used to use the word "doomed" or the phrase "we're doomed" a lot and so when we saw it used on the show by someone it stood out to she and I.
I forget if the scene opens with him saying "I'm doomed" or if she asks him what is wrong first-and that is how he replies, but it was funny to us because it felt like it came out of nowhere-but I guess it was there to replace the expensive slime cloud effect!

Not really all that expensive. It would have been the same effect we used in "Outer Space," after all. But it would have been time consuming, because chroma-key always takes a while to set up, align, color-balance, etc. It was the last day of taping, and everyone wanted to get to Abby's for the wrap party.

-but your use of the phrase "I'm doomed" was great- why did you decide on that phrase? it makes being slimed sound so dire! like it's the worst thing in the world.(and in ycdtotv land maybe it is)

The show was about pessimism and optimism, and "I'm doomed" was the most pessimistic thing that came to mind.

Thanks for the memoris BBOVENGUY... I do recall becoming ill at the read through. I was fine one minute, and the next I was in a car being rushed to the hospital.

The memory of Vanessas remark as I covered her with slime also made me smile!

    Thanks again!
