Altering the meaning of this thread slightly I'll mention some breakout acts of the 1970s whom I feel have nurtured and cultivated great new ideas in modern music.

(I'd like to include David Bowie but he had a headstart in the mid-'60s)
    Roxy Music
    Kraftwerk
    Tangerine Dream
    Throbbing Gristle
    The Sex Pistols
    The Clash
    The Ramones
    Talking Heads
    Peter Gabriel
    Kate Bush

There's more I could name but I think this is a good cross-section of innovators and pioneers whose output has influenced new wave, synthpop (electroclash), industrial, punk, world beat, and the wonder of below-the-mainstream alternative. I'll also point out that while this list seems pretty whitewashed some of these performers have unintentionally become the basis for hip-hop or have absorbed African rhythms and artists into their careers and turned out spectacular results people of all cultures have appreciated equally. I appreciate music that is able to derive from the creative roots of places and its people who seek to uncover new ideas. Hopefully there's more to be found - just for now it's so easy to look back at what has happened in the past.
The whole experience for me was a very enlargening one because I came to know and feel--understood a whole kind of world that was really new and alien to me, and I always had a certain feeling... because of the events that happened here.
