Thread: A few inquiries

    Default A few inquiries

I was wondering, were there any other cast members the writers tried to romantically link at any point? There was Rodney x Lisa, apparently (I'm certain Lisa did an interview talking about her first kiss or something on the show but can't recall where so if you know, feel free to share) and of course Doug x Vanessa. Maybe Marc x Moose sorta counts, despite the fact she wasn't into him.

Any idea how the writers decided which characters to do that with?

Also, for the heck of it, I was wondering why Rodney and Kevin Schenk left after the 1981 season. Rodney mentioned they were getting too old. So were they literally "booted" or was it their choice? With Kevin I could maybe see his leaving as he, apparently, didn't take working on the show very seriously. I could see him being booted for this reason too, but with Rodney I'm more surprised. He wasn't that old. They could've probably gotten another year or two out of both. It's not like Jono, Kevin S, Kevin K, Brodie, or Allisdair, for example who seemed to age over night.

To me at least it seems like there was some intended (on-screen) "chemistry" between Kevin Kubusheskie and Lisa. In a lot of the locker jokes segments from 1983, Lisa would kind of bat her eyes and twirl her hair and smile up at Kevin when he summoned her for one of his jokes.

Can't forget the Adam Reid-Alasdair-Alanis love triangle in 1986, most notably in Parties and Pop Music. Adam in particular was great in these scenes; he was so over the top. And Alanis was wonderful: frosty, but just receptive enough to keep them guessing. I wish she had been in more episodes; she was hilarious and her line delivery was always letter-perfect.

My personal favorite would-be romance is in 1984's Malls episode (one of my top ten, for sure), where Adam Kalbfleisch falls, suddenly and quite helplessly, in love with Christine. (I can't say I blame him.) This leads to one of the funniest and most risque lines in the show's history, when Ross asks Adam what he's doing hanging around the girls' dressing room, and he tells him he's waiting for Christine, "in case she needed any help...you know, taking off her clothes or something." I still marvel that they got away with that one.
"Now me, I play for fortune
    And those velvet curtain calls
I've got a black limousine and two gentlemen
    Escorting me to the halls
And I'll play if you have the money
Or if you're a friend to me
    But the one-man band
    By the quick-lunch stand
    He was playing real good
    For free..."

Send 'em home! Don't let 'em spoil your evening! What did Lance say in that one opposite sketch? "How can you be standing here washing the dishes when there's television to be watched?"

That's the attitude you've got to take with your students. Release your inner Schidtler.

Well, I guess there's no room for "Schidtler-onics" ("Schidtler-technics"?) in Business English. But at least you've got something to look forward to.

I was told quite explicitly NOT to link Alasdair romantically to anyone onscreen, that Alasdair's romantic interest should always be unnamed and unseen, so that girls in the audience could imagine themselves in the role. Of course, Roger then went and broke his own rule with Alanis, and in a rewrite of my own "Music" episode to boot. It's nice to be in charge.

And while we're talking about Christine, don't forget the dungeon sketch in "Outer Space," where Nasti gives Adam Reid a telescope, which he uses to peer into Christine's dressing room. Nasti then says, "You call that exciting? You have been in here too long."

I agree about Rodney could had stayed one or 2 more years. He also starred in UFO Kidnapped.
