    Default Your favorite opposite sketch

What is your favorite opposite sketch? Mine has to be the one from the 82' Culture ep. It's the sketch where Kevin and Martin are fighting over the remote to watch the Dukes of Hazzard or the opera. The mom eventually says "what have I told you about culture television and junk television." "I want to watch the Dukes of hazzard!" That sketch was hilarious.

My favorite opposite sketch is similar to yours-it was from the Whatever Turns You On pilot. It went something like this:

Elizabeth: Daaaaaad, can I watch the hockey game?
Lance: No! I waaaanna watch Liiiiitle House on the Prairie!
    Elizabeth: Awwwwww, but DAAAAAAD!

Ok, it doesn't come out very well written down, but the delivery of those lines was classic in my opinion.
"Without a song or dance, what are we? So I say 'Thank you for the music', for giving it to me...."

Mine is from Television, where Kevin and Lisa are in the bedroom watching TV and you hear "Ohhhh Kevin... Ohhhh Lisa" until Mom knocks on the door. She allowed Lisa to have a boy in the bedroom with her but was not allowed to watch TV. You can see Lisa trying to keep a straight face during that scene!

It seems like I was always writing last-minute Opposite Sketches when I was working on the set. We were always coming up short on them, or throwing the original ones out because they didn't work.

I had two in "Revenge" - the one where the kids get revenge on Barth by cooking him a gourmet meal and the one where Justin doesn't want to get revenge on someone who tried to flush his head down the toilet. The Barth's one was fun to shoot.

Two of the opposites in "Wildlife & Animals" were last-minute, too - the one where Vanessa gets mad at Snake Eyes for refusing to run over animals, and the one where the Camp Leader tells the kids to clean their guns because they're visiting the only known California Condor nest and they might never get another chance. I wrote the line, "Look, there's a chipmunk. Smash its brains out!" specifically for Vanessa, and she delivered it perfectly. The camping sketch was the only time I ever got Les Lye to crack up during read-through.

I haven't watched most of my eps in a long time, but my favorite one that comes to mind is when Mr. Schidtler starts rocking out his electric guitar in front of the class, while screaming "FANNET!!" (whatever the hell that means?) I think this was from College ('84). It made me LMAO every time!

Edit: Okay, after 25 years, the urban dictionary has now enlightened me on the meaning of that word.

Lisa: "Dad, my friends at school say you have no savoir faire"

Senator Prevert: "Subway fare?? Why would I need subway fare?? There are no subways in this city!"

The one that I still remember and just crack up at is the opposite sketch from Parties where Barth's Burgery truly becomes fine dining. They had Barth dressed in a tux while still wearing that "fry cook" chef's hat. It's the first opposite sketch that sticks out in my mind.

My other favorite opposite sketch is the one where Alasdair was performing in an alley and he's making all kinds of money. Adam said he saw Bruce Springsteen, Paul Macartney, Tina Turner and Bryan Adam performing on an another corner somewhere and he says "Who would want to see them" Alasdair then leaves and says I don't want the money. This is from the 86' Music episode.

Bob's remark reminded me of another classic where Brodie and Christine are at Barth's and it had become a gourmet establishment. Brodie said there was a speck of dirt on the knife and Barth gasps and gives him a clean one. I believe Barth uses the phrase "an affront to your personage" or something like that. He calls for "Garkon" [sic] with the classical music in the background and then yells "That's you Zilch!!"

    Cool

The ones in Classical Music get my funny bones tickling each and every time.
