Default Carleton Production has no rights to YCDTOTV

i have long desired ycdtotv on dvd, and often in discussing it i have come across the same piece of what i now know to be misinformation, that nickelodeon has no rights to it, but that Carleton Productions does. read below:

i recently wrote to a number of parties regarding YCDTOTV on DVD. so far only Carleton Media has replied. but check it:

    Hi Bill,

There is tons of interest for a DVD set of YCDTOT. Although Carleton
Productions did produce YCDTOT, that was when we were an affiliate of CJOH.
Now we are an independent film and television company. Unfortunately, we do
not own the rights to YCDTOT. The rights are jointly owned by CTV and
Nickelodeon. Perhaps if you start some sort of email petition to them, you
might have some success. Good luck!

so there it is, nick does own rights, if only partial rights.

how many eyebrows just raised, and how many of you are now on your way to buy some nick rewind dvd's?

Since Carleton produuction apparently has no rights to the show, they may not be party to the current status of the show rights - their information on who currently has rights to the show may no longer be accurate. Nonetheless, e-mail petitions to all parties with rights or stakes in YCDTOTV is certainly a good idea.

Where at Nickelodeon or CTV would petitions or other inquiries/demostrations of interest be sent?

Welcome to the board, atrijata, but this is not new information. It's been widely known for several years that CTV and Nickelodeon co-own the rights to the show. CJOH in Ottawa is owned by CTV in Toronto, and CTV handles licensing of show footage. CJOH lawyers in Toronto have been discussing the process of paying everyone involved in the production of the show, relating to its DVD release, since the show was produced under the terms of a Union. From 1982 until its end in 1990, Nickelodeon co-produced the program with CJOH. As a result, Nickelodeon retains the US broadcast rights and likely the US distribution rights, but elsewhere in the World the broadcast and distribution rights are owned by CTV.

Petitions work in some remote instances, but are not likely to work with the release of YCDTOTV. Nickelodeon already knows a large number of people want to buy the show on DVD. Until they can determine a reasonable amount to pay the cast and crew, while covering the licensing of remaining rights, a DVD release will stay on the horizon. Other than spreading the word of the "Nick Rewind Collection" and buying the two current titles, us fans can really only wait. As others have stated in other posts on this board, patience will be the key in regards to the show's eventual release on DVD.

" WHO EXACTLY OWNS YCDTOTV -- NICKELODEON, YTV, OR CARLETON PRODUCTIONS?
Carleton Productions. While Nickelodeon often gets all of the credit for YCDTOTV in the United States, they never have and hopefully never will own the rights to YCDTOTV, but they sure did have great time *using* the show to make their network what it is today. "

I got my Pete and Pete DVD set today. I noticed that one side of the little flyer has the 1993 Nick schedule. YCDTOTV (and other shows) are purposely left out. Why?

They probably left out the shows that aren't property of Nickelodeon for legal reasons."

"The first thing you can do is buy the other Nick Rewind DVDs. If sales are good for the ones for Clarissa and Pete and Pete, chances are good that Nick will follow suit with other shows, including YCDTOTV.

Keep in mind as well that, since YCDTOTV is actually owned by Carleton Productions, Nick would have to negotiate royalties with Carleton. So if the Nick Rewind DVDs that are being relased now prove popular, then Nick will likely work harder to get such negotiations finalized.

the same type of thing is all over the net. i'm sure you can understand my confusion.

it is however, refreshing to find a courteous board with a lack of trolling.

    thanks all!

Yes, it can be frustrating and I do understand your confusion. I'm simply pointing out the fact that the same post featuring Bob's comment "...since YCDTOTV is actually owned by Carleton Productions, Nick would have to negotiate royalties with Carleton," has a correction below it from myself. It basically states the same information about Nick and CTV, as relayed to me from CJOH and original YCDTOTV director, Geoffrey Darby.

And yes, it is also refreshing to have a clean board with no trolling. I've been a member since 12/99. We had a problem on here a couple years back with trolling, but it was cleared up and the board itself was recently re-vamped. Again, welcome to the board!

I suppose it might have helped had I made a statement like "I stand corrected" after David corrected me to avoid any confusion.

At any rate, it probably would be helpful to have the FAQ updated to reflect what's been brought up regarding who owns the YCDTOTV rights. Of course, Chris Gough (the webmaster) has mentioned he'll make updates as he has time. I imagine when he's able to do another site update, he can make the correction then.

YCDTOTV was never a very big deal on CTV, so maybe they're the ones holding it up.
