Thread: Stage Pollution: 16 Tons?

    Default Stage Pollution: 16 Tons?

Back in the early days they used to smash the kids with a huge cartoon-like weight that said "16 tons" on it.
I know it happened to Moose in "Saftey" and I think it happened other times to other kids too.I think once in an execution sketch.
    Three questions:
1.Why did they stop doing that?
    2. How many times did they do it? ( and to which actors)
    3. How did they do it? ( Cut a hole in the bottom? What was it made of?)

The 16-ton weight gag was a nod to Monty Python, who made a regular sight gag out of it. The 16-ton weight was only used once on YCDTOTV, and that was during the Safety First episode in 1981, when it was dropped on Christine.

Why did they stop doing it? Well, my best guess would be that they wanted to concentrate on their own sight gags.

I could be wrong, but I could swear that Jono Gebert had the 16 Tons dropped on him on the firing squad set...

You're right. I forgot about that one, from the Peer Pressure episode. My bad.

-and apparently in a camping sketch from the 89 season someone gets crushed by a huge weight. (I talked about it in my other post about looking for 2 scenes) what I don't understand is why they would use the weight prop waay back in the shows early days and then never use it again until the 89 season!?
does anyone know if the prop was the same prop or a different one? did they just have the 16 ton box sitting around the prop house for all that time and no one used it?
This makes me think maybe it was used more often and its just that no one remembers.
