I LOVED The Tomorrow People!! It's very cool to see revived interest in this show, but somehow I just can't see it working as well without the silly costumes and hokey effects LOL (but then, I didn't see the 90s version either....). Plus like YCDTOTV, the charm of The Tomorrow People was that the kids were not professionals-and I really can't see any TV company in America putting NON-professional child actors at the center of a sci-fi show in this day and age. Its strength was in its sincerity, not in its performances or special effects, and unfortunately I see very little of that sincerity in modern-day TV. Oh well. Maybe it'll work out after all! And if not, at least this will perhaps get people buying the DVDs of the original series (I may have been one of the few crazy enough to buy all three ridiculously expensive-but very complete-volumes haha....)

I'm also a huge fan (one of our test webcasts is actually about this topic). I have the original and the 90s reboot on DVD as well as all of the Big Finish Productions audio adventures on CD. The Big Finish version PERFECTLY captures the 70s cheese and continues the original story with almost everyone back at some point as adults (it even makes an indirect reference to the 90s series in the second episode of the first "season").

I'm EXTREMELY NERVOUS about this CW revival though, but when I let go of my attachment to the show, I realize that today's kids will likely have no knowledge of the source material. Klemmer, Plec, and Berlanti will be able to take whatever liberties they want and today's youth wouldn't know the difference - case in point, Dr. Jedikiah Price being the show's antagonist. I somehow have a feeling that story isn't going play out the way The Slaves of Jedikiah did.

I'm going to remain positive here though and really hope the show does well.

I share the trepidation expressed by both Ric and Gypsies, though I don't have the same attachment to the original. Hopefully we will be surprised. Remakes and "reboots" make me nervous, I have to admit.

If anyone can do it the CW can. Any network that can take an obvious Twilight cash-in like "The Vampire Diaries" and a show based on one of the least cared about DC characters ever "Arrow" and make them the two best and most addictive shows on television is OK by me. They even made the Beauty and the Beast reboot work pretty well. I trust them more than Nickelodeon with this reboot-but I am surprised it didn't end up on Nick.

I trust just about anyone more than Nickelodeon on just about anything...but I don't share your faith in the CW, or in modern production "values" as applied to ideas and concepts that are of a specific time.

I hope that, of the two of us, you are right and I am wrong. It would not be a nice thing to have the legacy of a show that means so much to so many besmirched by a remake that's unworthy of the original. I've seen that happen too many times to be sanguine about this.

In any case, I know a lot of people are holding their breath right now! I will join you in hoping for the best...

As a rule I hate remakes and reeboots. I loved Peter Jackson's early gore films (the Feebles, Dead Alive, Bad Taste) and his Lord of the Rings stuff, but I would rather have a rusty nail driven through my knee cap then watch his CGI remake of King Kong. I can't bring myself to watch the reboots of any of the classic slasher and gore films of the 70's and 80's either-even when someone tells me the new Evil Dead is really great or the new Texas chainsaw-they simply don't understand that the low budget gritty look of the originals is what made them scary. Even in modern franchises like Saw-the horror doesn't work because it's all too slick looking to be disturbing-even when well meaning folks like Quentin Tarintino or Rob Zombie try to make a film look old-school and gritty it still just looks like they are trying to capture that feel and failing.
But Sci-Fi, unlike Horror, doesn't have to have a low budget to be good. I prefer the cheap B sci-fi of the 50's, but huge budget slick sci-fi at least does have the potential to work( even if it often fails because of lack of imagination) Now I'm not saying the CW's Tommorow People will be big budget, but yes, it will be slicker than the original. However, I don't think they are banking on even nostalgia fans remembering the original series. I just read an overview of the CW's fall shows and it doesn't seem like they are even promoting the Tomorrow People as a reboot. Much like Beauty and the Beast, you didn't have to see the original show to like the new one. In this way they are just using the same concept for the old Tomorrow People-which was a good concept, and giving it second chance in the states. Lets face it, the original from what I've seen looked like the plan 9 from outer space of sci-fi tv shows. It was laughable. But the ideas were good. Maybe it's best they separate themselves from the original show and hope no one remembers it.
That being said, maybe they should have just titled the new show something else.

And my faith in the CW comes from it's ability to take concepts that you would think would be lame and make them totally awesome. Hell, they even got me to watch Gossip Girl! But they never get the numbers that the major networks get because they are pigeonholed as a teen channel. In fairness, their shows are aimed at the fifteen to thrity four year old demographic, but are executed well enough that anyone could get into them. The problem is it seems everyone over the age of thirty (and a disturbing amount of people under the age of thirty) just want to watch Law and Order and NCIS over and over and over again-to the point where even channels like USA-who have a whole roster of really good original shows-still take up ninety percent of their schedules with reruns of NCIS and Law and Order!
Anyway, I'm off topic a bit, but my point was, when I heard there was going to be a remake of the Tomorrow People I thought, "well that's a lame idea-why do that?" but if you trace the CW's history back to it's early days when they were still the WB-and remember they took a failed teen movie called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and turned it into one of the most amazing TV series of all time-trace that to it's modern day incarnation the CW who has transformed a B list superhero like Green Arrow into a phenomenon -you see they have a history of giving properties with potential a second chance instead of just exclusively devoting airtime on boring procedural dramas.
