Whats your favorite I heard that Scenes?

Mine is:

Jealousy: when Barth flipped his snot off his nose to Alasdair

Discipline: Barth saying "I heard thee"

Mysteries/Crime: Alasdair making fun of Barths Burgers on the link set then Barth said I heard that!

Bullies: Zilch said nothing but Barth said I heard that then hit him with the frying pan.

Sadly 89-90s he didnt do any funny I heard that scenes. Whys that?

I'll second your nomination of the scene from Jealousy. That one is beautifully played all around; I love Alasdair's reaction.

I'll also add two more: Vacations, where the joke was that Barth had vacationed in France, and Kevin says he figured that must be the case, because there were "frogs" in the burgers. Barth, with the aid of a French grammar, delivers his signature line in French...sort of.

And Outer Space, where Adam and Alasdair remark that the Barth burgers sent up with them in the capsule to help aid the "sickness test" won't give them an accurate reading, since they get sick eating those on earth anyhow. Barth appears out of nowhere, floating past the window, to deliver the line. Les played this especially well, in my opinion, and his sudden appearance, floating around in space, stands up no matter how many times I've seen it; it still makes me laugh.

In general, I like most of the scenes where Barth turns up someplace other than the Burgery and says it.

I think by 89-90 the tension that stemmed from Barth serving his burgers under the pretext that there wasn't something "in" them had vanished, so there wasn't any attempt on his part to deny the kids' wisecracks on the subject. If you notice, in those episodes, he's usually the one saying that the burgers are made of all sorts of gross stuff like rat snot, squashed skunks, etc. At the risk of coming down too much on that season, that's part of what I mean when I say that notions of subtlety had been left far behind by that point, and that's a major part of the reason I don't think they hold up as well.

My favorite thing about the Barth's scenes are the bit of a mystery over weather his burgers really have all that nasty stuff in them, of it they're just jokes, and the burgers just happen to be gross.
