"Slimed!" Launch Event at the 92nd Street Y

I thought I'd start a new thread specifically for the Slimed! Launch Event. It's this Friday, 9/27, at 7:00pm Eastern Time. Don't be late, because we YCDTOTV folks are the first ones up, and we'll only get about 15 to 20 minutes. Here's where you can catch the live-stream:

The YCDTOTV panel will include Christine McGlade, Alasdair Gillis (if his plane gets there on time), Geoffrey Darby, drama coach Carole Hay, "Contests" script writer (and YCDTOTV fan extraordinaire) Emily Rosenthal, and ME! I'll be the guy sitting at the end of the table, feeling like Guy Fleegman in Galaxy Quest.

It's times like this I'm happy I live in New York City and I can just pop over to these sorts of things on the subway. I'm very much looking forward to the entire event, but especially the YCDT panel.

What an absolutely wonderful event. I hadn't seen the list of who was going to appear, outside of the YCDT folk, so I was constantly being surprised. The entire evening was a joy from start to finish - the video is still archived at the 92nd St Y website, and I hope it stays up. For the YCDT portion, they started with a video message from Roger Price talking about inventing slime and the story of the first slime bucket, and he apologized to Tim Douglas for dumping near-sewage on him. And the panel was very fun - Christine is just awesome. She look great, she tells great stories, I could listen to her for hours. Alasdair told the story of going to the White House for the Easter Egg roll, but mentioned that President Reagan wasn't there because "He had just bombed Libya".

But the whole night was great. They started by showing a video for Cable Operators from about 1981, highlighting the Nick schedule and showing some footage from all the old shows, some of which I'd never seen before (the opening sequence of "Video Comics", for instance.) The Double Dare panel was hysterical - I had no idea Harvey and Robin were so much fun off-camera. The animation panel was mindblowing - freakin' Billy West was there! The voice of Philip J Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Doctor Zoidberg, Ren, Stimpy, Doug. He was definitely the big star of the evening. The "Clarissa" panel was very fun - the actors who played Ferguson and Sam were there along with the creators. But the "Grand Finale" was truly great - a general Q&A panel with Big Pete (Michael Maronna), Pete's Dad, Phil Moore the host of Nick Arcade, Sponge from "Salute Your Shorts", Gary from "Are You Afraid Of The Dark", Brad from "Hey Dude", Jessica from "Wild and Crazy Kids", the creators of "Nick Arcade", the creators of "Roundhouse" - apologies for not posting the actors' full names, I'm sure they hate being referred to as their characters.

But there was just so much joy, from the panels, from the audience, everywhere. One of my favorite things was watching the other people on the panels listen to the people talking - you could see in their faces how magical it all was and how happy everyone seemed to be celebrating what they accomplished all those years ago.

The whole thing was just very inspiring - the way this motley band of creatives all contributed to making something that was such a huge part of the lives of everyone in the auditorium. And fun to see BBOvenGuy speak in person! I'm still on a high from the whole thing.

We don't pretend to think a hastily-executed series of screen grabs can even begin to do justice to how really lovely Christine was last night - and we're sure that what we saw, watching at home, was nothing compared to seeing her in person. (We agree with Going Great; we could have listened to her for hours.) But here's a page of hastily-executed screen grabs nonetheless, for the benefit of anyone who wants some slight idea.

P.S. Please watch at least the whole YCDTOTV panel if you can; it was delightful. The whole night was spectacular and deeply moving, and we congratulate and thank Matt Klickstein for having put it together.

I used a program for the Mac called iSkysoft iTube Studio to download the video. My usual methods (Firefox Download Helper, for example) didn't work. The one I used is paid software, but you get a trial period where you can download 5 videos of any length outside of YouTube. It downloaded at 480p and looks pretty good, but not as crisp as the HD on the streaming site.

Honestly, I am *shocked* at how quiet this board has been since the event. I realize that the YCDTOTV panel was only a portion of the evening, but I really expected to see more comments here. It was so great to see all of these influential people on one stage. Two of the show's biggest stars, their skilled drama coach, two of the show's creative writers, the show's original director, and a special video from the show's creator - all a few months before the show's *35th* anniversary... amazing!

What a wonderful piece, Bob. Reading it, and looking over your photos, we felt like we were right in the middle of it all. Thanks so much for posting this.
