It's Nickelodeon. They make illogical decisions. It's nothing new.

It's not illogical, the decisions they're making are completely justified. Not making a Nick Rewind channel on regular TV is completely justified. All those old Nick shows were contracted to require royalties to be paid to everyone. It would never be cost effective to air them.

        Josh is right
At least in the UK there isn't this problem - actors only need to be paid for clips not full programmes.

Josh...all show are that way today. Every time something airs on tv anywhere, every actor gets a cut.

Viacom writes these kinds checks all the time....should be a non-issue.

Maybe Josh forgot to mention that the classic Nick-made shows (including YCDTOTV, assuming the fact Nickelodeon can play them in the USA whenever they want is correct) don't have enough interest and no one would watch?

"the 'n'" was showing classic degrassi reruns in the middle of the night a while back, so i'd think there'd be at least as much interest in ycdtotv..

True, but Degrassi: The Next Generation's huge success played a key role in them airing Degrassi Junior High. Likewise, if they were airing Fifteen: The Next Generation, we'd be watching Matt drinking his way through grade 10 and Dylan trying to seduce Courtney with his electric guitar in his garage while wearing black t-shirts with the sleeves rolled up all over again. Ahhhh, the good ol' days.

Don't forget Billy becoming a bully in season 3! Now we know where Ryan Reynolds learned his moves for later in his career! haha

I really think there's an audience for the classics. If they can rerun Password Plus ad nauseum on GSN, I think they could find a home for YCDTOTV!

yeah, but i suspect the only ppl watching at 3 a.m. were gen-Xers with insomnia, and not the 10-yr olds who love degrassi.. it just sounds like a long list of lame excuses..

Something that should be kept in mind regarding some of these channels is the fact that some of them do not air commercials, other than advertisements for network programming. Nick GAS is like that, so is Boomerang.

So in order to make it cost effective to air shows Nick doesn't solely own the rights to, Viacom needs to sell ad time. Given that no ads appear on Nick GAS currently, I would suspect it's likely they can't sell ad time.

The other question becomes the audience. A Nick Classic channel would be watched primarily by those who grew up with such shows, which raises the question as to how you can convince advertisers that their product fits the audience, when they'll look at the shows and say that they are children's shows, so that's obviously the target audience.

It's a much more complicated issue than people realize. No matter how big of a company Viacom is, it needs to sell advertising to pay the bills, and if it can't sell advertising to make airing a show cost effective, the show won't air.

Aren't some cable networks supported by individual subscriptions and cable fees? (This could be the case with Nick GAS, if they aren't running commercials - if Viacom simply wasn't selling commercials, I would think they would switch programming much quicker.)

The target audience would be a problem, regardless of funding model, however - these were kids shows, but the primary audience is not kids, but we who were kids when these shows were on - however, the 20-35 demographic who would be the market for these shows is the prime demographic for advertising, so if advertisers could be convinces this was the real audience for these shows, they ought be interested.

We might as well just shut this thread down, since it obviously isn't happening.

I think the perfect place to shop YCDTOTV would be a new channel called the Retro Television Network. It isn't available in my area so I don't really know much about it, but it looks somewhat similar to a TV Land or Nick at Nite. I think a channel like this could stand out by acquiring non-traditional classic fare, such as old Nick shows and cartoons, TV variety shows (Donny & Marie or Captain & Tennille anybody?), or perhaps some classic game shows that GSN (Game Show Network) doesn't want to bother with. Of course, I don't know what the acquisition rights would cost and it might be too much for a fledgling network, but in order for another classic TV network to prosper, they really need to find a niche. Going with non-traditional classic programming like YCDTOTV would be a great start.
